NSYMCA’s Shannon Sliwinski Awarded as Outstanding Program Director
Illinois State Alliance bestows Sliwinski with the Matt Ottaviano Award at Fall Rally

Northbrook, IL – The North Suburban YMCA is proud to announce that Shannon Sliwinski has been named the recipient of the Matt Ottaviano Outstanding Program Director of the Year Award by Illinois State Alliance, recognizing her exceptional leadership, innovation, and dedication in youth programming. Shannon has been with the NSYMCA for over 21 years and currently serves as the Y’s Youth Development Director.
The award, named after Matt Ottaviano—former Executive Director of the Lawson YMCA and Vice President of Operations at the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago—honors program directors who exemplify honesty, fairness, intelligence, and a philanthropic spirit, while connecting with staff, donors, and members alike. Shannon’s award focused on childcare, camp, before and after school, and early learning and she earned this award for her outstanding contributions in youth programming.
The award was honored because of Shannon’s one-day enrichment workshops that allow children to explore new activities without the pressure of long-term commitments, responding creatively to the needs of today’s busy families. The approach not only encourages children to try new experiences but also strengthens budgetary goals and engages new families with the NSYMCA.

She intentionally designed these workshops to be affordable and accessible, ensuring cost would never be a barrier for families to participate. By recognizing that families often juggle multiple interests and responsibilities, Shannon expanded opportunities for a broader segment of the community to experience high-quality programming that might have otherwise been out of reach.
"Shannon has demonstrated remarkable leadership at the Y and her creativity and ability to collaborate with community partners has transformed the way we approach youth programming,” states Ricky Gonzalez, Senior Director of Camp and Youth Programs at the NSYMCA. “Her work inspires staff across our YMCA and helps us to think differently so we can pursue innovative formats that truly meet the needs of our families."
