Resident Foils Ruse Burglars; DUI Driver Strikes Guardrail: HP Blotter
Thieves steal basses, booze, makeup, wallets, bicycles, catalytic converters and a $10,000 engagement ring: Highland Park Police Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
INCIDENTS
RUSE BURGLARY ATTEMPT?
Someone tried to break into a home in the 2100 block of Tennyson Lane around 4 p.m. on Oct. 26. Police were told a black SUV with silver rims, possibly a Honda CRV or a Nissan Rogue, pulled up the to the home before a man in a white jacket and "nice clothing" exited the car and banged on the door. The man tried to lure the resident into the backyard, but the resident became suspicious and told them to leave.
RUSE HOME BURGLARY
On Oct. 27, a Glencoe Public Safety Department investigation led Highland Park police to discover an unreported Oct. 8 ruse home burglary in the 200 block of North Deere Park Drive East. In that incident, a masked man talked his walk into the house to "check the water." Cash, jewelry and tickets to a zoo, arts center and Holocaust museum were among the items reported stolen.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
Sometime between 6 p.m. Oct. 28 and 9:45 a.m. Oct. 29, someone shattered a service window at Martinizing Cleaners, 1740 First Street, by unknown means, causing about $300 in damage.
CAR BURGLARY
Someone got into an unlocked car in parked in a driveway in the 2000 block of Park Lane around 3 a.m. on Nov. 10. The burglar rummaged through the glove box, but nothing was reported missing.

HOME BURGLARIES
- Sometime between 1:30 p.m. Nov. 7 and 9 a.m. Nov. 8, someone broke the glass on a front entry door of a home in the 1600 block of Spruce Avenue, ransacking the interior and stealing an unknown amount of jewelry.
- A burglar broke the glass of a rear sliding glass door of a home in the 300 block of Aspen Lane between 2:40 and 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 8 before ransacking its interior and stealing some amount of costume jewelry.
- Officers were summed to a home in the 1200 block of Linden Avenue by a burglar alarm. While checking the exterior of the house, police found an unopened safe sitting in the backyard as well as a shattered rear sliding glass door. Nothing else was reported missing.
THEFTS
- Someone stole an e-bike charger, a neon green-yellow helmet and rain jacket, a cable lock and a string backpack from a shared bicycle room at a residential building in the 1500 block of Oakwood Avenue between 3 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3:20 p.m. Oct. 23.
- Someone broke into two adjacent lockers at the LA Fitness, 115 Skokie Valley Road, and stole wallets with cash, credit and identification cards inside around 6 p.m. on Oct. 31.
- Between 2:20 and 3 p.m. on Nov. 5, someone broke into two lockers at the LA Fitness, 115 Skokie Valley Road, removing both locks and stealing wallets. The thief left keys and cell phones behind.
- A resident in the 1200 block of Park Avenue West reported around 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 that an engagement ring with a gold band and diamond worth $10,000 had gone missing.
- Someone stole an unlocked Giant brand bicycle that had been left outside the Walgreens, 655 Elm Place, around 7:45 p.m. on Nov. 12.
STOLEN CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
- Four men stole two catalytic converters from cars in the parking lot of D&R Autoworks, 1454 Old Deerfield Road shortly before 4:30 a.m. Oct. 30. A third vehicle's catalytic converter was cut on one end but not removed.
- During the night of Oct. 29 or early morning hours of Oct. 30, someone stole catalytic converters form two vans and an SUV parked at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car, 1430 Old Skokie Road.
- Some time prior to 7 a.m. Oct. 31, someone stole catalytic converters from three pickup tricks from Etruscan Gutter & Roofing, 1460 Old Skokie Road, for an estimated $5,500 loss.
SHOPLIFTING
- Staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported on Oct. 27 that someone had stolen 10 bottles of various types of alcohol worth about $488, walking out of the store at some point the previous day.
- At some point prior to the morning of Nov. 1, someone stole eight bottles of alcohol valued at about $360 from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road.
- Someone stole five bass guitars from the Guitar Center, 143 Skokie Valley Road, at some point prior to Nov. 1. One was later found at a pawn shop in Chicago. The total value of the four missing basses is about $6,800.
- Someone stole a wallet from a desk on the showroom floor of the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery, 227 Skokie Valley Road, around 3 p.m. on Nov. 2. Someone later tried to use one of the credit cards at an unidentified location.
- Staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported on Nov. 5 that, at some point the previous day, a man entered the store and stole a $540 iRobot Roomba vacuum.
- Staff at the Ulta Beauty, 135 Skokie Valley Road, reported on the evening of Nov. 7 that, at some point on Nov. 5, two "suspicious" women or girls stole nearly $2,700 worth of makeup products.
- An unidentified man and woman driving a yellow Penske van stole 18 bottles of Casamigos Tequila and various food items valued at more than $1,200 from the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, prior to 10 p.m. on Nov. 10.
- Around 2 p.m. on Nov. 12, officers were called to a retail theft at the CVS Pharmacy, 1539 Clavey Road, for a report than a man and woman had stolen about $500 worth of alcohol.
- On the evening of Nov. 12, police were called to the Ulta Beauty, 135 Skokie Valley Road, for a report that a woman or girl had stolen about $2,550 worth of makeup on Nov. 11.
ARRESTS/CITATIONS
Herberto Moreno Alanis, 43, of the 7000 block of North California Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 6 p.m. on Oct. 28 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license after officers called to the 500 block of Hyacinth Place found him drunk and asleep behind the steering wheel. He was also issued a citation for illegal transportation of alcohol.
Javier S. Gallardo, 30, of the 1600 block of McKay Street, Waukegan, was arrested around 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 29 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. He was also issued citations for speeding and improper lane usage.
Timothy P. Vacala, 35, of the 100 block South Canal Street, Chicago, was arrested around 12:30 a.m. on Oct. 30 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without a valid license and unlawful possession of an open container of cannabis by a driver following a traffic stop at the intersection of Skokie Valley Road and Clavey Road. Officer also issued him citations for improper stop at single red light and failure to spot when required.
William E. Earl, 50, of the 4000 block of South Calumet Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around noon on Nov. 3 on an active arrest warrant for failing to appear in court in Douglas County after officers were investigating a report of a possible criminal violation.
Michael A. Glenday, 60, of the 700 block of Stone Gate Drive, Highland Park, was arrested around 10 p.m. on Nov. 4 and charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery after officers were called to his home for a report of a dispute.
Michael M. Stephens, 29, of the first block of Prairie View Court, North Chicago, was arrested around 8:45 p.m. on Nov. 6 on an active arrest warrant for failing to appear in Lake County court after the driver of a car he was riding in was pulled over at Old Elm and Skokie Valley roads and arrested for driving with a revoked license.
Yobany Cartagena, 49, of the 400 block of North Lewis Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. on Nov. 10 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a one-vehicle car vs. guardrail crash in the 1500 block of Skokie Valley Road. Officers also issued him citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
Diashun S. Dixon, 19, of the 400 block of West Water Street, Waukegan, was arrested around 11:45 a.m. on Nov. 13 on multiple active in-state arrest warrants after officers were called to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 425 Laurel Ave., for a report of a suspicious person.
