HIGHLAND PARK, IL — A couple in their 70s were stabbed to death by their adult son in the downtown Highland Park apartment they shared, authorities said.

When officers called to the apartment for a "wellness check" noticed blood underneath the door, they forced their way in and found the couple dead inside, according to city officials.

Both were found lying on the floor in a pool of blood, with blood spattered on the walls nearby, and a large knife nearby, and Barry Goldberg, who was found covered in blood, admitted killing his mother, according to Assistant State's Attorney Lillian Lewis.

Results from autopsies conducted Thursday showed the couple died as a result of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the coroner's office.

Police had gotten reports of threats and shouting from inside the apartment and heard someone yell, "don't shoot," from inside just before entering, the prosecutor said.

Wearing a white Tyvek suit, Barry Goldberg appeared in court for the first time Thursday afternoon before Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak, who granted the Lewis' request to set the cash portion of Goldberg's bond at $500,000.

Goldberg told the judge he would not be able to hire his own attorney.

"I'm going to need a public defender, as of right now," Goldberg said.
