Stoned, Speeding Felon Faces Felony; Hit-And-Run DUI Driver: Blotter

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CAR
A group of unidentified thieves stole a Dodge Ram truck from the northeast part of the McGrath Kia parking lot at 250 Skokie Valley Road after breaking the passenger side window on the morning of Jan. 3. The stolen pickup was last spotted leaving the lot, possibly heading south, police were told the next morning.

STOLEN BIKES
Someone stole two Trek bikes — a mountain bike and road bike — from a locked storage area in the basement of an apartment building in the 1100 block of St. Johns Avenue at some point during the week prior to Jan. 4.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
Someone stole a catalytic converter form a Mitsubishi SUV parked in the rear lot of Highland Park Ford, 1333 Park Avenue West., at at some point between Dec. 30 and Jan. 5.

PACKAGE THEFT
Between 12:15 and 4 p.m. on Jan. 6, someone stole a package delivered to a front porch in the 3000 block of Greenwood Avenue. The package contained a tote bag valued at $150.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Two thieves in a silver sedan, possibly a Dodge Dart, pulled up beside a car at Bucky's, 2580 Skokie Valley Road, while its driver was pumping gas around 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 27. One of the thieves got into the car and stole a purse containing a Louis Vuitton wallet, cash, three credit cards, a debit card and a driver's license before getting back into the silver car and fleeing south on Skokie Valley Road.
  • Someone burglarized two unlocked SUVs parked in the 1300 block of St. Johns Avenue between 10 p.m. Jan. 4 and 8 a.m. Jan. 5, stealing a garage door opener from inside.
  • Someone stole cash from the glovebox of a possibly unlocked Ford Bronco parked in a driveway in the 1200 block of Forest Avenue between noon Jan. 4 and 2 p.m. Jan. 5.

SHOPLIFTING

  • A man or boy stole more than $3,200 worth of fragrances from the Ulta Beauty shop at 135 Skokie Valley Road at some point on Dec. 26, police were told the following day.
  • Staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported on Dec. 29 that a male shoplifter stole about $388 worth of over-the-counter drugs two days earlier.
  • On Jan. 5, a female shoplifter stole more than $1,600 worth of products from the health and beauty department before leaving in a dark colored sedan, police were told the next day.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Erin Nicole Hamilton, 47, of the 800 block of Deerfield Road, Highland Park, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Dec. 31 after police were called to a crash at the intersection of Park Avenue and Skokie Valley Road. Hamilton was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after officers determined she was impaired. Police also issued her citations for improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol by a driver.

Calvin S. Burns, 29, of the 2300 block of Lydia Avenue, Zion, was arrested around 3 p.m. on Jan. 6 and charged with criminal trespassing and resisting arrest after officers were told he refused to leave the property of Porsche, 2300 Skokie Valley Road, after being asked.

Orlando Arroyo Jr., 26, of the 2200 block of Hervey Avenue, North Chicago, was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, driving under the influence of drugs and unlawful use of cannabis by a driver after officers dispatched to a complaint about a bad driver found him speeding north on Skokie Valley Road. He was also ticketed for improper lane usage and speeding.

Lester G. Torres, 18, of the 600 block of Dixon Court, Gurnee, was arrested around 4 a.m. on Jan. 8 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near the intersection of Half Day and Skokie Valley roads. They found Torres was impaired and his car's registration was suspended and charged him with driving under the influence of alcohol and no valid registration and cited him for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and speeding between 26 and 34 mph over the limit.

Brendan J. Phildor, 28, of the 500 block of North Central Avenue, Highwood, was arrested around 11 p.m. on Jan. 8 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving with a suspended or revoked driver's license after officers were called to a report of a suspicious car on Logan Loop in Fort Sheridan. They found Phildor passed out behind the wheel of his car, which did not have valid registration. Officers also issued him a citation for illegal transportation of an open container of alcohol.

Angel Castrejon, 19, of the 200 block of Sheridan Avenue, Highwood, was arrested around 6:45 a.m. on Jan. 9 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a rollover crash into a ravine in the 2300 block of St. Johns Avenue about seven hours earlier. Two of the car's occupants were reportedly taken to Highland Park Hospital with injuries from the crash that were not considered life threatening.
