HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The following information comes from the Highland Park and Highwood police departments and public records as a record of incidents reported to the police and of those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.

INCIDENTS

STOLEN CAR
Someone stole a Chevrolet Tahoe left unlocked in the 1100 block of Glencoe Avenue, which was recovered by Lake Forest police on June 27.

RUSE HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 2000 block of Kipling Court reported that a heavyset man wearing a blue face mask claimed their water supply had been contaminated and distracted the resident while another man entered through a back door before ransacking several rooms and stealing jewelry. The duo left the area in a brown SUV prior to 4:35 p.m. on Aug. 1.

SHOPLIFTING

  • Two people stole a variety of teeth whitening products and eyedrops worth about $466 from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, around 1 p.m. on June 17, police were told 11 days later.
  • Someone stole two bottles of champagne valued at about $136 from the Binny's Beverage Depot, 153 Skokie Valley Road prior to 2 p.m. July 7. The suspect was described as 40 to 45 years old, between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet tall, 150 and 165 pounds and black. He had dread locks and a beard and was wearing glasses, a t-shirt and shorts with "Brooklyn" written on them, police reported.
  • Staff at the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, reported on July 15 that someone stole more than $162 worth of alcohol around 7:36 a.m. on July 2 before leaving in a taxi. The suspects were described as a man and woman in their 60s. The man had a medium build and average height and was wearing a blue jean jacket, blue denim pants and a trucker hat, while the woman had a heavy build and blond hair.
  • A woman stole 39 bottles of alcohol from the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, around 6:30 p.m. on July 16 for a loss of about $875.
  • Two unidentified shoplifters stole more than $726 worth of allergy medications from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, around 3 p.m. on July 28, police were told five days later.
  • A man and a woman stole 10 bottles of alcohol worth about $450 from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, around 7 p.m. on July 29, police were told eight days later. The woman was described as between 20 and 40 years old, with a tattoo on her left forearm and wearing a Cubs hat, grey t-shirt and jean shorts. The man was described as 40 to 60 years old, bald with a goatee, wearing glasses, a blue polo and black pants with one leg rolled up. The couple returned on July 31, stealing 10 more bottles of alcohol and some clothing of unknown value. They left in the same dark-colored SUV, police were told on Aug. 6.
  • Staff at the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, reported on Aug. 6 that an unidentified person had stolen about $835 worth of over-the-counter medications on July 31.
  • Someone stole a Dyson vacuum worth about $750 from the Target, 2099 Skokie Valley Road, on July 28, police were told on Aug. 6.

  • Someone stole an iPad worth $600 from a room at Warren Barr North Shore, 2773 Skokie Valley Road.
  • Someone stole a blue Schwinn mountain bike at some point between 7 and 8 p.m. on July 11 after it was left unlocked at the Highland Park Library, 494 Laurel Ave.
  • Someone stole a package after it was delivered to Amazon on July 2 for a loss of $130.
  • Around 10:30 a.m. on July 16, someone stole the wallet of an employee at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery. One of the two suspects was described as a woman or girl wearing sunglasses, a face mask, gray sweatpants and a gray shit with a duck on it, the other was described as a woman or girl wearing sunglasses, a face mask, a gray long-sleeved shirt and gray sweatpants with a bag on her shoulder.
  • Someone stole cash from a wallet inside locked gym locker at the LA Fitness, 115 Skokie Valley Road, between 8:05 and 9:28 p.m. on July 20. During the same time frame, someone got into another locker and stole a gym lock from inside.
  • Someone stole an package delivered to a house in the 700 block of Sheridan Road around 2:30 p.m. on July 26. The thief was described as tall, thin and in his 20s, wearing a white t-shirt and bright-colored bandana.
  • A white Schwinn with a blue cup holder worth between $400 and $500 was stolen from the patio of a home in the 700 block of Broadview Avenue.
  • Someone stole a blue iPhone 12 after it was left on a tree stump in front of an apartment building in the 2700 block of St. Johns Avenue prior to 6:45 p.m. on Aug. 1.
  • Around 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 2, police were called to Rosewood Beach for a report that an iPhone and multiple ID cards were taken from a backpack left unattended near the restrooms. One of the cards was later found in one of the bathroom's toilets.
  • Police were told on Aug. 3 that someone had stole a black leather phone case containing an iPhone and two credit cards from Highland Park Hospital, 777 Park Ave. West, between July 25 and July 28. The cards were later used fraudulently at other merchants.
  • Around 3 p.m. on Aug. 6, a man entered the Tamales Mexican restaurant at 493 Central Ave., ordered and drink and stole a pair of sunglasses worth $350 from the counter. He was described as 25 to 30 years old, about 5 feet, 9 inches, 160 pounds and black, wearing a blue Nike shit, gray shorts and fingerless gloves. He was riding a light-colored mountain bike and was carrying a black hat with white lettering and a backpack.

THEFT FROM VEHICLE

  • Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Ford truck parked in the 1400 block of Old Skokie Road between 5 p.m. June 30 and 7:30 a.m. on July 5.
  • Between 9 p.m. July 9 and 11 a.m. July 10 someone stole a catalytic converter from a Honda parked at the Courtyard Marriott, 1505 Lake Cook Road, for a $2,200 loss.
  • Someone stole a catalytic converter from a Honda SUV parked in the lower parking garage at 1849 Green Bay Road at some point between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on July 11.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole phone charges and change from a Subaru Forester left unlocked while parked in the 600 block of Gray Avenue between 6 p.m. June 26 and 6 a.m. June 27.
  • Someone got into an unlocked Volkswagen Jetta after it was left unlocked in the 600 block of Homewood Avenue between 8:10 p.m. June 26 and 6:40 a.m. June 27, but nothing was reported stolen.
  • At some point prior to 8:30 a.m. on June 27, someone stole a debit card and driver's license from inside an unlocked Lexus sedan parked in a driveway in the 600 block of Detamble Avenue. The cards were later found in the stolen car recovered that day in Lake Forest.
  • Someone got into an unlocked Mazda and unlocked Honda parked in the 600 block of Detamble Avenue, but nothing was reported stolen.
  • Someone stole headphones, glasses and tools from inside an unlocked Dodge Ram parked in a driveway in the 1600 block of Sherwood Road between 8:30 p.m. July 2 and 9 a.m. July 3.
  • At some point prior to 11 p.m. July 3, someone stole a garage door opener from inside an unlocked car in the 1700 block of Midland Avenue.
  • Someone stole a handicapped placard from an unlocked Hyundai in the parking lot of the Jewel-Osco, 1600 Deerfield Road, between noon and 12:30 p.m. on July 21.
  • Someone broke into a Chrysler sedan parked at the Courtyard Marriott hotel at 1505 Lake Cook Road by smashing the driver's side window, but nothing was reported stolen from inside.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Someone punctured the tire of a Tesla that was parked in a lot in the 400 block of Elm Street between 4:15 and 6 p.m. on June 27.
  • At some point between the evening of July 8 and morning of July 9, someone shattered a wall-mounted mirror, pulled a soap dispenser off the wall and left an 8-foot tree branch in the toilet at Mooney Park, 1100 Cavell Ave. Police reported the bathroom's exterior lock was undamaged.
  • Someone punctured a tired of a Honda Odyssey parked in a driveway in the 1400 block of Oakwood Avenue around 6:30 p.m. on July 21 before driving away north on Oakwood Avenue in a red sedan.
  • Around 11 p.m. on July 24, someone got out of a dark-colored BMW SUV parked outside the entrance to the building at 1900 Sheridan Road and damaged two large flower planters before getting back in the SUV and leaving.
  • Someone damaged a mailbox on July 15 and knocked over a potted plant on July 27 or July 28 at a home in the 900 block of Lilac Avenue.

VANDALISM

  • Someone left black graffiti tags on multiple street and construction signs on Sheridan Road, St. Johns Avenue and Lincolnwood Road at some point prior to 4 a.m. on June 29.
  • Someone left messages in blue and pink chalk on a street sign in the 1200 block of Glencoe Avenue between 2 and 3:15 p.m. on July 7.
  • Someone wrote letters in red on the southeast corner of a bridge at the intersection of Sheridan Road and Elder Lane prior to 7 p.m. July 31.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Julian A. Williams, 29, of the 2100 block of Lorraine Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 1 p.m. on July 2 and charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident and driving with a suspended or revoked license. Officers were called to the intersection of Route 41 and Gage Lane in Lake Forest, where police pulled over a car that had rear-ended another vehicle in the 2500 block of Skokie Valley Road in Highland Park. Officers also issued him a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Jose G. Alvarez-Velazquez, 37, of the 1200 block of Lunt Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 8:45 p.m. on July 5 and charged with disorderly conduct after officers were called to Highland Park Hospital, 777 Park Ave. West. Alvarez-Velasquez had left by the time police arrived, but they found him near Elm Place and Green Bay Road and arrested him.

Justin R. Giles, 42, of the 1400 block of West Northeast Shore Drive, McHenry, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on July 9 and charged with violation of an active order of protection after officers were notified of the violation and pulled him over at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Second Street.

A 27-year-old Newark, New Jersey man was arrested around 5 p.m. on July 15 and charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license following an encounter with police in the 2600 block of Sheridan Road.

Jaeden M. Nysti, 22, of the 1300 block of Ohio Street in Racine, Wisconsin, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on July 17 and charged with multiple counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one count of unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver after officers pulled him over for driving 81 mph on Skokie valley Road and found open cannabis and two loaded handguns.

Daniel Fernando Rosales, 20, of the 1800 block of Hebron Avenue, Zion, was arrested around 9 p.m. on July 21 on an active arrest warrant from McHenry County for failure to appear in court after police were called to Michael's, 1879 Second Street, for a report of a disturbance.

Jefry Jouse Cardona Vasquez, 21, of Antioch, was arrested around 11:15 p.m. on July 21 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley Road and Park Avenue West. Officers also issued him citations for unlawful display of registration sticker and improper lane usage.

David Robert Cardenas, 34, of the 3100 block of Martin Lane, Rolling Meadows, was arrested after 2:30 a.m. following a traffic stop at Green Bay Road and Glenview Avenue. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Robert B. Mittel, 63, of the 3800 block of Shore Avenue, Lincolnwood, was arrested around 10 p.m. on July 28 and charged with residential burglary and criminal damage to more than $500 in property after officers were called to a report of a home burglary in the 1900 block of Burr Oaks Lane.

Zamir F. Chaze, 23, of the 500 block of North Butrick Street, Waukegan, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 7 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding more than 35 mph over the limit following a traffic stop at Skokie Valley and Old Elm roads.
