The village tried to do so six years ago, but the state denied it.

HINSDALE, IL – After being rejected six years ago, Hinsdale is again looking to impose a new gas tax at the Oasis.

The tax would amount to 3 cents a gallon, starting in January.

In 2019, the state enacted a law allowing Cook County towns to levy a gas tax. Hinsdale adopted the tax, intending it to apply only to gas stations in Cook County. (Most of Hinsdale is in DuPage County.)

However, the state informed the village that the tax must be applied to all stations in Hinsdale. So the village repealed it.

Earlier this year, the state allowed a town to apply the tax just in Cook County.

At Tuesday's Village Board meeting, trustees discussed the tax and plan to vote on it later.

Trustee Matt Posthuma said nonresidents mainly use the Oasis, which has a gas station in each direction on Interstate 294.

"Now that we have that flexibility, we are now re-imposing to charge this tax as we originally intended back in 2019 on the gas stations in Cook County, namely the Oasis," he said.

The tax is expected to generate $100,000 a year.
