Illusions Wins 'Best Art Magazine,' 'Best Size/Concept Magazine'

Hinsdale South's 2015 edition of Illusions Art Magazine won two national awards from the American Scholastic Press Association.

Hinsdale South High School today congratulated the staff and sponsors of Illusions art magazine for winning two national awards from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA). The 2015 edition of Illusions won the categories of “Best Art Magazine” and “Best/Size Concept Magazine” at the high school level.

Illusions competes each year with magazines from across the country,” remarked Hinsdale South art teacher and Illusions sponsor Janet Roller-Schmidt. We are always very pleased to win awards; it’s great to receive the recognition.”

In addition to this year’s success, Illusions won the ASPA’s honor of “Most Outstanding High School Magazine” in 2010 and 2013.

On incorporating the critiques from the judging process, Ms. Roller-Schmidt said, “We look at their remarks and then address technical issues that we deem important. Ultimately, my editors have control over what they feel is really important. We always reflect upon the academics of the magazine format but often purposely choose to break them. With Illusions, we purposely push the boundaries of what a magazine is and seek to create a work of art that is in and of itself a work of art.”

The 2015 editorial staff is led by editors Katarina Martinet and Jaclyn Hofstetter, along with staff members Nupur Bahl, Adrian Herath, Jeremy Kloth and Becca Timko.

In addition, the following art teachers also helped support the 2015 production ofIllusions: Jen Belmonte, Laura Sievers, Kris Toro and Mark Wanner.
