Metra Service Delayed After Freight Train Hits Car on Hinsdale Railroad Tracks

Metra service was delayed for nearly an hour Thursday night, after a freight train collided with a car on the railroad tracks near the train stop in downtown Hinsdale.

It happened around 5 p.m., and the driver was able to get out of the car before it was struck by the train.

The Hinsdale Fire Department was called to the scene of the crash.

"[The driver] saw the train coming , and got out of the automobile before the train struck the car," said Hinsdale Fire Capt. William O'Rourke. "It was a slow-moving coal train from the city heading west."

Metra spokesperson Tom Miller said that although it was not a Metra train that was was involved in the collision, Metra service was affected.

"Several of our trains were delayed up to 50 minutes," said Miller. Miller said that trains are moving again according to schedule.

Hinsdale Fire Capt. O'Rourke said the driver did not need to be transported to the hospital, and traffic resumed after police had the car towed away.
