Free Event Highlights Irish Canal Builders Sunday
Lewis University historian to speak about how Irish immigrants built the I&M Canal, changing American history.

The Irish American Society of County Will is hosting a discussion Sunday about Irish immigrants who came to the area to build the Illinois & Michigan Canal, stayed, and changed the face of America.
Laura Pratt, of Lewis University History Center will speak on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Gaylord Building, 200 W. 8th St., in Lockport. The event is free to the public.

The event will also feature the Patrick Fitzpatrick family, who immigrated from Ireland and became the contractor of the canal.
“Enjoy lunch on your own beforehand at the beautiful Public Landing located in the Gaylord Building,” said the event flyer.

The Irish American Society of County Will was founded in 1981, according to Mike McHugh, founding member. The mission of the group is to promote Irish culture and preserve Irish-American heritage.
