Lockport Approves Interim City Attorney

Sonni Choi Williams has served as the City's in-house attorney since 2017, and has been appointed as a circuit judge.

LOCKPORT, IL — At its meeting on Feb. 5, the Lockport City Council approved the appointment of an interim city attorney.

Sonni Choi Williams has served as the City's in-house attorney since 2017, and has been appointed as a circuit judge of the 12th circuit court in Will County, according to Council documents.

"[It's a] short-term agreement here, until we can get interviews and things for Sonni's replacement," City Administrator Ben Benson said. "He'll be here [this] week, if approved."

The Council approved Thomas Thanas to serve as city attorney while administration searches for a permanent candidate. Thanas, a retired judge and a former City Manager of Joliet, previously served as Lockport's City Attorney from 2015 to 2017.

The City plans to post the attorney position and begin interviews. Thanas' contract will be a short-term 60 to 90-day contract, council documents state.
