2 Teens Arrested After Stealing Car, Gunshot Heard: Homewood Police

Homewood police said a shell casing was found in the area Thursday night but did not say if it was related to the vehicle theft.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Two teenagers are in custody after police said the duo stole a car from a person who was delivering groceries Thursday night. Police also said a gunshot was heard in the area.

Officers reported to the 1800 block of 187th Street Thursday at around 10 p.m. According to officials, a person was delivering groceries to a home on the block and left their vehicle running and unlocked while ducking out to deliver the bags.

The person heard a single gunshot and turned to see their blue Nissan Murano being driven away. As of Monday, police said they did not know if the gunshot was related to the stolen vehicle.

Shortly after, the car was spotted and stopped by Homewood officers near the 1400 block of Jill Court. A 14-year-old and 15-year-old were inside and taken into custody.

The 14-year-old driver is facing charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing and eluding and obstructing identification. They were taken to Cook County Juvenile Detention center.

The 15-year-old passenger was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and released to their guardian that night pending a later court appearance.

Police said a shell casing was found near where the car was stolen and are asking any residents with information on the gunshot to reach out to detectives.
