“I played baseball at Izaak Walton as a kid and celebrate the Fourth of July there every year,” Kelly said.
Craig Lowry, Homewood resident and four-time Run Forest Run veteran, enjoys the opportunity to run with friends.
“Homewood’s hidden prairie and wilderness is a great backdrop for a fall race,” Lowry said.
The formal race started as the idea of local triathlete, coach and race director Nick Quirke.
“While there were dozens of local road races from which to choose, I really wanted a simple, small trail race to capture the natural beauty of running,” Quirke said. “The Run Forest Run enables runners to compete on a course they train on, and run alongside their friends and neighbors in a beautiful autumn setting.”
Izaak Walton Board Member and Trailmaster John Brinkman had set the seeds for the race by inviting a small group of members on the original four-mile course he created through the nature preserve in 2005. The race has grown in size and stature ever since.
Again this year, a unique art show will be hosted in Izaak Walton’s recently remodeled cabin featuring nature-themed fine art from local artists and photographers. Participants will be able to browse and purchase the pieces after the run.
