Fire At Hazel Crest Home May Have Started From Candle: Officials

According to fire officials, 5 people inside the house were sent to the hospital to be treated for smoke exposure from the Feb. 16 fire.

HAZEL CREST, IL - Five residents were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in a Hazel Crest home last week, fire officials told Patch.

According to first responders, a bathroom inside a home at 16820 Trapet Street caught on fire at around 5 a.m. Feb. 16. Firefighters from Homewood and Hazel Crest worked to put the fire out which was "quickly knocked down and brought under control," according to a written statement from Hazel Crest officials.

Five people inside the house were evacuated but had to be taken to South Suburban Hospital for treatment due to smoke exposure. Among the five, two teenagers were evacuated. Fire officials said the family was treated and released.

Officials were still investigating the cause of the fire as of Tuesday night but told Patch they believe it started from a candle inside the bathroom.
