Flossmoor Officials Celebrate Bonds Infrastructure Referendum

Flossmoor celebrates after voters approved issuing $10 million in bonds to fix streets and sidewalks.

FLOSSMOOR, IL — The people of Flossmoor have voted and with more than 80 percent of voters saying yes, residents approved a $10 million general obligation bonds referendum for infrastructure improvement in the village.

The bonds will be used for resurfacing and reconstructing streets and sidewalks all over the village. It will also contribute to improvements to stormwater infrastructure used for reducing flooding in the Flossmoor Road viaduct and upstream tributary areas of the Heather Hill, and neighborhood north of Downtown.

According to the village, the $10 million in general obligation bonds will be paid off in 20 years. The bonds will be financed by the village's property tax levy and replace an $8 million bond issued by the village to build the Flossmoor Public Library, which will be paid off by 2021.

Trustee James Mitros said the village made the right choice passing the referendum on Election Day.

"The bonds are coming off of the library. So it's going to be relatively painless and this is something we need," Mitros said. "I feel very proud of our village and very proud of the citizens of this town and that they wholeheartedly endorse us and said, 'Yes, these are things that we have to do.'"

Mitros has been a village trustee for over 26 years and said he believes the bonds transition from the library to streets will be a smooth one.

"I foresee no hitches at all ... but our rates are so low right now. It's a fantastic opportunity for us," Mitros said. "I'm truly proud of our accomplishments. Many people here today probably moved here because of the way that we've run this village."
