FLOSSMOOR, IL — On a holiday set apart to honor a civil rights icon who dedicated his life to public service, volunteers from around Flossmoor and surrounding communities will come together this weekend to help serve a greater good for local residents.

The Village of Flossmoor is hosting two days of service in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which falls on Monday. Monday marks the ninth year that the village has hosted a Day of Service during which the village partners with local not-for-profit organizations, local businesses, and government agencies to promote the volunteer-driven day of service.

Service projects will be held at Flossmoor Village Hall, Western Avenue Elementary School, Heather Hill Elementary School, Serena Hills Elementary School, Flossmoor Hills Elementary School, Parker Junior High School, Homewood Flossmoor High School, Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland, Irwin Community Center, HF Homes, Shops on Sterling & Gypsy Fix, Flossmoor Community Church and Dunning’s Gourmet Market & Deli, the village said.

The Village of Flossmoor joined the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service movement in 2015, hosting a community service project at Village Hall and recruiting volunteers for other local organizations. Since then, the village and its partners have sponsored a number of service projects and connected hundreds of volunteers to service organizations throughout the south suburbs, the village said in a news release.

However, the volunteer efforts will not be limited to Monday as the village has partnered with the national not-for-profit organization Sleep In Heavenly Peace to build 20 new beds for local children in need. That effort will take place on Saturday at the Flossmoor Public Works facility, which is located at 700 Central Park Ave.

Saturday’s service opportunity is the second year that volunteers have built beds for needy children, but village officials said that volunteers will build twice as many beds on Saturday as they did last year. Beds will be built between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday and the effort is scheduled to involve more than 70 volunteers, the village said.

A complete list of service projects and details of volunteer opportunities is located on the Village of Flossmoor’s website.
