Heather Hill Elementary Raises $650 Through 2nd Annual Think Pink Day And Penny War
The schoolwide effort supported The Cancer Support Center of Homewood and Project Kennedy.

FLOSSMOOR, IL — On October 29, one of Flossmoor School District 161's schools, Heather Hill Elementary, concluded its 2nd Annual Think Pink Day with the close of its Think Pink Penny War, a schoolwide effort to support The Cancer Support Center of Homewood and Project Kennedy. Both organizations provide essential services to individuals and families affected by cancer. The Cancer Support Center offers strength, guidance, and emotional care to anyone impacted by the disease.
Project Kennedy works to raise awareness and provide services to cancer patients, their families, and their communities, including the donation of handmade blankets as a reminder that no one fights alone.
Heather Hill’s Think Pink initiative was created by Ms. Callahan, a second grade teacher who was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in December 2023. After six months of chemotherapy and surgery, she returned to her classroom ready to continue teaching. Reflecting on her experience, Ms. Callahan said, “Going through treatment showed me how powerful a supportive community can be. My students and their families helped me through some very difficult days, and I wanted them to understand how much their kindness matters.”

This year’s Penny War invited students to participate in a friendly competition to see which grade level could raise the most funds. Together, Heather Hill Hornets collected a total of $650 for the two partner organizations. Second grade students contributed the highest amount and will celebrate with an Italian ice treat in the near future.
On behalf of The Cancer Support Center and Project Kennedy, Ms. Callahan extends heartfelt appreciation to all families, students, and staff for their generosity and support.
