Hillcrest HS Celebrates National Day of Silence

Student-led event brings attention to LGBT harassment

The Hillcrest High School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) facilitated our school community’s annual Day of Silence on April 17. The Day of Silence is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) name-calling, bullying and, harassment in schools. This national school initiative is an opportunity for students to work toward improving school climate for all students. Students take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior.

“Being a part of GSA at Hillcrest is like being a part of a four-year family. It broke social barriers and changed my outlook on life. For me, our GSA was one of the positives,“ said Jessie Craig, Hillcrest GSA President.

More than 150 Hillcrest students participated in the event and should be commended for their commitment to equality and social justice.
