Homewood Humane Society Branch Celebrates Grand Opening Saturday

The Homewood branch of the South Suburban Humane Society celebrates its grand opening Saturday with an open house.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Homewood branch of the South Suburban Humane Society celebrates its grand opening Saturday with an open house.

The new Homewood Adoption Center will be open from 12 to 5 p.m. to celebrate the new location with refreshments, prizes and pet adoptions.

Officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday afternoon— and by late afternoon its first adoption was complete. A couple adopted Archie, a pup, who was also the first pet to move into the new center.

"Our eyes have always been on this day, on welcoming all of you to this adoption center we have built — welcoming the the amazing community of Homewood and Flossmoor into these doors for adoption, for volunteerism, for philanthropy, and, quite simply, to save more lives," said CEO Emily Klehm at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The new shelter takes over the former Homewood Animal Hospital, which has been vacant for more than four years. It is designed to be an adoption center with the capacity for about 40 dogs and as many as 25 cats.

The flagship Chicago Heights location, which has served the area since 1970, will remain the same. It will continue to adopt animals and take in strays from surrounding communities. The Homewood site will serve as adoption only, but it will offer on-site spay and neutering services.

The address for the Homewood Humane Society is 2207 183rd Street next to Blueberry Hill Pancake House.
