Homewood Police Department Hiring Entry Level Officers

Applications must be in by Feb. 27.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Homewood Police Department is accepting applications for entry-level officers, with three expected to be hired within the next six months.

Applicants who pass the initial examinations are placed on an eligibility list. Those applicants will then undergo a background check, polygraph test, psychological exam, medical exam and enrollment at the police academy for some. After graduation from the police academy (where applicable), applicants will continue on through the Field Training Program and then a probationary period before beginning duties as a Homewood police officer.

The eligibility list will remain active for two years, or until exhausted, McGrath wrote.

Starting pay for an entry level officer as of May 1, 2023 was $79,486, and includes 11 paid holidays. That bumps up to $81,871 as of May 1, 2024, also with 11 paid holidays.

Scanned copies of applications can be sent by e-mail to kboswell@homewoodil.gov. The subject line must read "Entry Level Police Officer Application."

The department seeks candidates with "good communication skills, compassion, empathy, integrity and an eagerness to learn," Homewood Police Chief Denise McGrath wrote.

"These are some of the qualities we believe will be a natural fit for a career with the Homewood Police Department."

The minimum qualifications and applications are available online. The written exam will be conducted online on March 9.
