Homewood Tax Preparer Charged With 21 Counts Of False Returns: Authorities

If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison for each count, authorities said.

HOMEWOOD, IL — A tax preparer from Homewood appeared in court Thursday and is charged with 21 counts of preparing false returns, according to authorities.

Byron Taylor operated We Are Taxes Inc. and, for the tax years of 2017 to 2020, he prepared returns containing false information that resulted in clients claiming refunds to which they were not entitled, authorities said. The wrong information included fraudulent business losses, false deductions and unreimbursed employee expenses, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

If convicted, Taylor faces up to three years in prison for each count, authorities said.
