Humane Society Waives Fees Through Weekend After Hitting Max Capacity

Officials for the South Suburban Humane Society said adoption fees will be waived for pets over 30 pounds through Sunday.

HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR, IL — The South Suburban Humane Society is at maximum capacity with cats and dogs in need of homes, shelter officials told Patch.

To combat the rising number of pets housed at the shelter's Chicago Heights and Homewood centers, a spokeswoman for the non-profit told Patch all adoption fees for pets over 30 pounds will be completely waived through April 10.

In a previous interview with Patch, SSHS CEO Emily Klehm said larger pets — specifically dogs — are hard to find homes for in part due to stigmas surrounding certain breeds and also size restrictions for rental properties.

Adoption fees typically range from $35 - $135 for larger dogs depending on age. At the time of adoption, all pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
