Rabid Bat Found In Homewood

A bat found in Homewood May 14 tested positive for rabies.

HOMEWOOD, IL — A bat found May 14 in Homewood tested positive for rabies, Cook County officials said.

The bat was found in the 1900 block of Evergreen Road, according to Cook County Animal and Rabies Control. The bat was tested by the Illinois State Health Laboratory.

Residents are reminded to keep dogs, cats, and ferrets on a leash when outside the home. All animals should be current on rabies vaccinations.

Residents should not handle bats, skunks, or other wild animals. If a bat or skunk is found down or dead on your property, residents should contact the Cook County Department of Animal Control at (708)974-6140.
