Gunshots Hit 3 Cars, 2 People Hurt In Chain-Reaction Crashes In Homewood: Police

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday at 175th and Dixie Highway, police said.

HOMEWOOD, IL — Two people were injured, and a suspect is still being sought after shots were fired into traffic, setting in motion a chain-reaction crash Tuesday evening in Homewood, police said.

Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Homewood police responded to a report of shots fired and a traffic crash at the intersection of 175th and Dixie Highway.

A gunman in a vehicle heading north from Dixie onto westbound 175th Street fired an "unknown" number of shots at an occupied vehicle that was stopped at the traffic light at eastbound 175th Street and Dixie.

After gunshots struck the car, police said the targeted vehicle attempted to retreat and struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Dixie. That vehicle then drove into another vehicle that was stopped on northbound Dixie at 175th. Meanwhile, the shooter's vehicle fled westbound 175th street from Dixie.

Two occupants of the car that was hit by the targeted vehicle were treated by Homewood Fire Department paramedics and transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Three cars were hit by gunfire: the vehicle that was the target of the gunshots, the vehicle involved in the first crash, and an unoccupied vehicle parked in the East Hazel Crest Metra Parking lot.
