The home at 4 Eden Lane was built by the late Peter Gavankar, who died in 2012. Gavankar was from India and he arrived in the United States in 1960 with only $8, one suit and a scholarship to study electrical engineering at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, according to his obituary.
He moved to Joliet in 1963, according to his obituary, where he founded Rockdale Controls Inc., the company he ran for 42 years. Gavankar was noted for inventing the controls for soft-serve ice cream machines, Mr. Coffee and a “classified” item for NASA’s Gemini project.
