2 Unconscious Heroin Users Arrested After Child Cries In Room: JPD
Joliet police responded to the Best Western on Enterprise Drive for a welfare check after staff reported overhearing a crying child.

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Police Department announced that two people, 32-year-old Kody Campbell and 27-year-old Samantha McCaughn, were arrested Monday night on charges including child endangerment after their 5-year-old girl was crying at the Best Western hotel.
Campbell and McCaughn were both found unconscious, according to Joliet police. Officers entered the guest room and located Campbell and McCaughn unconscious on the floor in the bathroom. Both were given their notices to appear in court as per the SAFE-T-Act on charges of child endangerment as well as possession of controlled substances.
According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, Monday's incident unfolded around 9 p.m. at the Best Western, 4380 Enterprise Drive. The call began as a welfare check after staff reported overhearing a child crying from a guest room.

English said officers learned that prior to their arrival, hotel staff went to the guest room and found a 5-year-old girl, who indicated her mother and father were in the bathroom and have not come out. Hotel staff walked the child to the front desk.

Police said officers entered the guest room and saw Campbell and McCaughn unconscious on the bathroom floor. Officers managed to wake them both up, and Joliet Fire Department paramedics evaluated them, according to English.

Joliet police said they recovered suspected heroin and fentanyl from the bathroom. Campbell and McCaughn were taken to Ascension St Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department. Officers placed the child in their protective custody, and she was also taken to Ascension St Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department for a medical evaluation.
"Officers noted that living conditions within the guest room appeared to be very poor," English said.
Campbell and McCaughn were placed into custody and processed at the hospital. The child was placed into the care of the Department of Child and Family Services to be eventually placed with a different family members.
The permanent addresses that Joliet police had for Campbell and McCaughn indicated they lived in the 300 block of Bridge Street, just up the hill from the Jackson Street Bridge.
