3 Broken Ribs, Bruised Liver, 2 Black Eyes For Channahon Woman, 74, Run Over In Joliet Walmart Parking Lot
Herbert Hume, 37, formerly of Joliet's Twin Oaks Drive apartments, said he was homeless and just trying to escape, court documents show.

JOLIET, IL — Wednesday night will mark the third consecutive night that Joliet 37-year-old Herbert Hume spent in the Will County Jail in connection with last week's parking lot crash at the Joliet Walmart — an incident two witnesses say was deliberate, according to police.
A 74-year-old Channahon woman has suffered two black eyes, three broken ribs, a bruised liver and other injuries after Hume used his vehicle to run over the Walmart shopper in broad daylight, according to court records.
It took about a week for the Joliet Police Department investigation to wrap up with the filing of several counts of aggravated DUI and aggravated battery causing great bodily harm for Hume.

Now, the Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow has filed a petition to deny pretrial release for Hume, who will be returned to the Will County Courthouse in handcuffs and shackles for his Thursday morning court hearing in Courtroom 405 of Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.
According to prosecutors, at 2:15 p.m. on Oct. 7, a 48-year-old woman from Channahon was at the Joliet Walmart on West Jefferson Street, driving her blue 2023 Ford Escape, and her 74-year-old mother was with her. In the left parking aisle, the Channahon woman backed up slightly and after doing so, while her vehicle was stationary, a 2017 Chevy Cruze in the right parking aisle backed into them.

The two Channahon women got out of their vehicle to obtain the driver's information, "but the driver was not interested," prosecutors revealed.
As the 74-year-old woman stood near her passenger side door, prosecutors say Hume backed up, knocking her to the ground. Next, Hume drove forward, pinning her under the wheel, "but he could not go over her. Video shows that three men tried to get the car off of her, but to no avail," court documents show. And that's how the Joliet Fire Department found the woman upon their arrival at the Walmart.
"At least two witnesses believe that the driver did so deliberately," prosecutors noted.
Joliet police made Hume undergo breath tests for alcohol, and he registered a 0.092, which was above the legal limit to be drunk in Illinois, the petition indicated. Prosecutors say at least one other vehicle was dinged by Hume as he drove forward, and one Walmart customer saw the incident unfold and "grabbed the defendant's arm and told him that he was not leaving. (The man) stated that the defendant told him that he was homeless and just trying to escape."
Joliet police learned from Hume that "he also admitted not having insurance," court documents state.
Prosecutors furnished Will County's judges with a seven-minute-long Walmart parking lot surveillance video obtained by a Joliet police detective, urging the judge to watch at least the first two minutes of the video before rendering her decision on Hume's pretrial detention.
Hume has filled out the paperwork applying for a Will County Public Defender. On his document, he listed himself as homeless and owned the 2017 Chevy Cruze that has a value of $5,000. He listed his income as being $350 per month from selling plasma.
