JOLIET, IL — Sherrod Taylor, a 49-year-old Plainfield resident, is back in the Will County Jail following his second arrest so far this year by the Joliet police, and both arrests involve allegations of Taylor becoming violent toward members of the Joliet police force.

Taylor's latest crimes, according to his criminal complaint, took place last week when he was driving 80 mph along one of Joliet's busiest thoroughfares, Theodore Street. Taylor has now been kept in the county jail facility since July 21, the jail logs indicate.

Now, Taylor is charged with aggravated speeding as well as aggravated driving while license revoked, aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

According to the complaint, Taylor drove a silver Volkswagen Atlas on Theodore Street on July 21 at a speed that was 35 mph or more in excess of the speed limit. Prosecutors say Taylor actually drove 80 mph when the Joliet speed limit was 40 mph.

The complaint also alleges that Taylor spit on Joliet police officer John Harris and committed a battery against Officer David Gutierrez by knowingly opening his mouth and moving it with a biting motion toward his ear.

As for his fourth charge, Taylor was driving the silver Volkswagen Atlas on Theodore Street "and he did so at a time when his driver's license was revoked for a violation," the court files show.

This marks Taylor's fifth violation for driving on a suspended or revoked license, with all of his previous crimes happening in Cook County, the prosecutors pointed out to Will County's judges.

At the time, Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said that on a Friday night, officers responded to a house in the 2100 block of Mystic Drive for an unwanted person. The officers learned from the resident that Taylor was intoxicated and was no longer welcome upon the property, English said.

As an officer stood speaking with the complainant, Taylor exited the residence and aggressively approached the complainant, according to police. English said that when the officer tried to intervene, Taylor pushed the officer’s arm away and bumped the officer with his chest. Then, Taylor pushed the officers’ arm away a second time and was then taken into custody following a struggle in which Taylor attempted to resist arrest, according to police.

Taylor kicked the same officer while being placed into the squad car, English said.
