Beat the Heat: Joliet Cooling Centers Available

An ongoing heatwave has prompted officials to remind residents about local cooling centers, and how to stay safe during extreme temps.

JOLIET, IL - Amidst an ongoing heatwave sweeping over the Chicago area this week, Joliet officials are reminding residents to take precautions to ensure their health, safety and well-being.

The forecast for this week calls for humidity and high temperatures in the 90s.

Joliet residents can seek shelter and relief from the heat in the following locations:

  • Louis Joliet Mall, 3340 Mall Loop Drive
  • Illinois Department of Human Services, 45 E. Webster St.
  • Illinois Rehabilitation Services Center, 1617 W. Jefferson St.
  • Other public places such as malls, libraries and movie theaters

"Please remember to check on the elderly, those with medical conditions and those with special needs during periods of extreme hot weather," said a city of Joliet news alert for residents. "These hot and humid conditions may lead to an increased risk of heat-related stress and illness, particularly for the very young, the elderly, and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities."

The notice also urges residents to be mindful of high temperatures in vehicles.

"Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes," it states. "Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle. Beat the heat — check the back seat!"

Additionally, residents should remember that opening fire hydrants is against the law. Open hydrants may hinder firefighters' ability to extinguish fires, reduce water pressure in area homes, and cause basement flooding.

Keep Cool Tips for Senior Citizens

During heat emergencies, seniors are urged to contact their local area agencies on aging or the Illinois Department on Aging Senior Help Line at 800-252-8966. Representatives will help them locate senior centers, adult day service sites and other buildings that serve as cooling centers, among other services.

Anyone needing assistance during a period of extreme heat should call 9-1-1.
