Dozens Brawl on South Joliet Street, 5 Go to Jail: Cops

One of the five had to go to the hospital first to get a Taser probe pulled out of his chest, police said.

Joliet, IL — Two men, a woman and two teenage girls were carted off to jail after the cops broke up a wild brawl on South Joliet Street Tuesday evening, police said.

Misty McElrath, 35, Maurice Matthews, 24, Shane Mitchell, 37, and the teens — ages 16 and 17 — are all related and were presumably fighting on the same side, police said.

The five of them, and about three dozen others, were brawling on South Joliet when officers arrived, police said.

One of the teenage girls was armed with a bat, police said, and an officer took it away from her. As another officer was escorting the girl away, Matthews allegedly jumped on his back. McElrath then pushed the officer, police said.

Around this time, Mitchell ran up and assumed a “fighting stance,” police said. An officer shot him with a Taser, and they both went tumbling to the ground. The officer’s hand was injured in the struggle, police said.

Officers were unable to pull a Taser probe out of Mitchell’s chest. He was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center where it was removed.

Mitchell then joined McElrath and Matthews at the county jail.

The teens were taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
