  • At 6:36 a.m., Joliet Fire Department responded to the Amazon warehouse for a structure fire. Engine Company 3 found the fire was in the trash compactor attached to the building. The compactor was used for the facility to recycle cardboard.
  • Attached to the compactor was a 30 x 8 x 8 - foot metal roll-off style garbage container.
  • Engine 3 used tow straps to pull the container filled with cardboard away from the building. As they did, other Joliet units began to arrive.
  • Engine 1 entered the building to look for fire extension and begin ventilation of the area.
  • Engine 7 began suppression of the compacter. The cardboard payload in the metal container was also extinguished. The quick effort by Engine 3 to remove the metal container kept smoke limited inside the building.
  • "Our suppression efforts were successful, and no damage was noted within the compactor unit. There was no damage to the structure or any product inside the building," Stachelski said.
  • Crews returned to service at 6:59 a.m.
