Former Cop Charged With Impersonating Cop

He quit his cop job after a high speed chase that led to a Chicago police officer's death.

A former Calumet Park cop was charged with impersonating a police officer.

Jerald Nettles, 45, allegedly lied to Woodridge police Sgt. James McGilvrey.

Nettles claimed he was a police officer so he could get his car from the parking lot of the RoomPlace furniture warehouse while it was engulfed in flames last week, a source said. Nettles works at the warehouse, the source said.

Woodridge police spokeswoman Traci Marrocco declined to discuss the case.

Nettles resigned from the Calumet Park Police Department a month after a March 2014 crash took the life of Chicago Police Officer David Harris, according to a story in the Chicago Tribune.

Nettles was chasing a van he believed to have been stolen and the fleeing vehicle smashed into Harris’ Lexus, killing him, according to the story, which said Harris’ wife, Sandra Harris, went on to sue Nettles and the Village of Calumet Park. The lawsuit remains pending.

Nettles remains at large. Messages left at the listed telephone number for his address in Chicago were not returned.

The warrant for Nettles’ arrest carries a $50,000 bond.
