Hat-Stabber Files to Divorce Husband Half Her Age

The Joliet woman had been jailed for allegedly stabbing her now estranged husband.

JOLIET, IL — A Joliet woman jailed for allegedly stabbing her husband after slicing up his hat is back on the street and has filed for divorce.

Colette Sheward, 48, has decided to split from her 24-year-old husband, Antone Sheward, in the wake of allegedly attacking him — and his hat — with a knife.

Colette Sheward was locked up the day after Christmas after allegedly taking a knife a knife to her husband’s wrist and hand. She confessed to the stabbing but claimed she did it accidentally while she was cutting up his hat, police said.

Antone Sheward wrapped his badly bleeding hand in a rag and drove himself to the hospital, police said. He reportedly explained that he and his wife were arguing when she grabbed a knife and started cutting up his hat. He then “got a little too close to her and she purposely stabbed his hand.”

Colette Sheward spent three days in jail before a woman in Arizona posted $3,000 bail for her release, according to court records. After she got out, Colette Sheward, who said she has cancer, fell ill and was taken to the hospital, according to court papers.

Colette Sheward spent “several days” in the hospital, according to a petition requesting a protective order against her husband. The petition was denied.

Colette Sheward said her husband showed up at the hospital “every night,” and attempted to “kiss (her) and jump in bed with” her after she got out of jail.

Colette Sheward also accused her husband of stabbing himself and blaming her for it.

“He admitted this and I have this on a recording,” she said.

In her divorce petition, Colette Sheward laid claim to “all furniture and property” in the couple’s Morgan Street home and asked for possession of their 2006 Chevy Impala.
