According to Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English, officers responded to the Motel 6 for a disturbance to find that Bodemuller was intoxicated and had been involved in a disturbance with a woman. While officers handled the incident, Bodemuller was irate and repeatedly approached officers after being told to stop, police said.

Officers settled the disturbance and began to leave the parking lot. As one officer tried to drive away from the parking lot in a squad car, English said Bodemuller raised his hands and walked directly in front of the squad, causing the officer to brake suddenly to avoid striking him.
