Joliet Returns to Park District With New Billboard Proposal

The plan, which includes non-compete clauses for the district's top event sponsors, calls for electronic ad signs on park district sites on Jefferson Street and Route 59.

At the meeting in September, Joliet Park District commissioners decided the ball was in the City of Joliet's court in regard to the electronic billboards the city would like to place on park district property.

On Monday night, Assistant City Manager Ben Benson approached park board commissioners with a new plan.

"We had had conversations with Dominic (Egizio) and the staff about having digital advertising," he said, addressing board members. "We're proposing a new agreement from three sites down to two."

In addition, the city proposed a non-compete clause for the top three park district sponsors. Currently those are Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, D'Arcy Motors and ATI Physical Therapy.

After a short address to commissioners, Benson passed out a memo that outlined their new proposal. In addition to creating a non-compete clause, the new proposal includes a review period every 90 days and the ability for the park district to add up to an additional two major sponsors to the non-compete list.

"We're still trying to work on this three-way marriage that we think can be beneficial to all of us," Benson said.

Park Commissioners did not comment on the new proposal, telling Benson that they would pass the new proposal to the staff.
