Joliet Recognizes National 'Fix-A-Leak Week' To Promote Water Conservation

National Fix A Leak Week runs from March 15 – 21, 2021. This initiative, sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense Program, aims to reduce water waste by encouraging individuals to check their home and business for potential water leaks, where nearly 1 trillion gallons of water are wasted annually nationwide.

Individuals can help Joliet achieve its water conservation goals by seeking out and fixing water leaks. During Fix A Leak Week, the City will be handing out free leak test kits and Practical Plumbing Handbooks on a first-come, first-served basis. Kits and handbooks can be picked up at City Hall, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. The City will also be posting water leak detection and conservation tips all week long on Facebook and Twitter.

Faced with a water supply that will no longer be sustainable by 2030, the City launched a study of alternative sources of water in August 2018. In January 2021, the City Council selected the Chicago Department of Water Management to provide Lake Michigan water to Joliet. Water conservation is one component of the Alternative Water Source Program.

The City is committed to taking actions to help residents with conservation through education and programs such as low flow toilets and rain barrels.
