JOLIET, IL — Congratulations to the Joliet Central and West High School students who were honored for their Advanced Placement (AP) and National Merit achievement during the October Board of Education meeting. Award designations include:

  • AP Scholar: Granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.
  • AP Scholar with Honor: Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more exams.
  • AP Scholar with Distinction: Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more exams.
  • National Merit Commended Scholar: To be recognized as a National Merit Commended Scholar, students must score at or above the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s (NMSC) Selection Index qualifying score on the PSAT/NMSQ. For the Class of 2026, the minimum score to be considered for Commended Scholar recognition is 208. This score represents roughly 2-3 % of PSAT/NMSQT takers.
  • National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist: A prestigious academic recognition earned by fewer than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. Over 1.3 million students from nearly 20,000 high schools entered the competition by taking the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), and just over 16,000 advanced to the Semifinalist stage with only 748 high school seniors recognized with this honor in Illinois. Semifinalists must meet several rigorous requirements to become Finalists, including submitting high academic records, strong letters of recommendation, and confirming SAT or ACT scores.
