Joliet's 2018 Recycling, Hazardous Waste, Christmas Tree Pickup

Weekly recycling and hazardous waste pickup are among several changes starting in Joliet with the New Year.

JOLIET, IL -- With the New Year comes weekly recycling collection, household hazardous waste and electronic recycling, and Christmas tree composting for Joliet.

Starting Jan. 1, 2018, residents need to set their recyclables out for weekly pickup no later than 7 a.m. on their assigned collection day.

"Please remember to only put recyclables in your recycling cart," city officials said, in a reminder notice. "It is important that you do not place food, liquids, and plastic bags of any kind in the recycling carts."

Household hazardous waste and electronic recycling also begins on the first of the year. Residents who pay for municipal waste on their water and sewer bills can call 800-449-7857 or email atyourdoor@wm.com to set up a collection pickup. There is no fee for the service, officials said.

Those wanting to have their Christmas trees composted, rather than sending them to the landfill, can bring them on Jan. 8 to the Joliet Public Works Department, 1203 Cedarwood Drive, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. All ornaments and lights need to be removed, but trees do not need to be cut down prior to composting.

"If there is a large snow storm, this collection will take place at a later date due to lack of personnel to man the drop off," officials said.

The last day to place live Christmas trees outside at the curb for garbage collection will be Wednesday, Jan. 31. Trees that are 5 feet in length smaller can be placed for pickup in one piece. Those measuring more than 5 feet tall must be cut in half. All trees should be placed at residents' normal collection spots on their regular pickup day.

"Also, if residents want larger or smaller garbage or recycling carts, they have until March 1, to exchange them for free," officials said.

After that date, normal fees of $40 per cart apply.

Residents should call 815-280-7854 for a free cart size exchange.
