Junior High Basketball Coach Jailed For ‘Inappropriate’ Texts to Teen Player

The Peotone man was charged with grooming.

A junior high school basketball coach was charged with grooming for allegedly sending inappropriate texts to one of his teenage players.

Samuel Burks, 48, was arrested on the felony charges and booked into the Will County jail Friday. He was only in custody for a little more than three hours before he posted a $100,000 bond for his release.

A week earlier, a 14-year-old girl's mother told Will County deputies that Burks had sent her daughter “inappropriate text messages,” police said.

Burks, who was the teen’s basketball coach at Peotone Junior High School, had been sending the girl such messages for months, police said.

Detectives reportedly obtained a warrant to search Burks’ Mallard Lane home prior to his arrest.
