Little Girl Suffers Serious Leg Injury As DUI Offender Runs From Wreck: Joliet Police

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Police Department announced the arrest of 40-year-old Joliet man Fabian Salgado in connection with a crash on Ingalls Avenue that left a 2-year-old child with a serious leg injury. Police spokesman Dwayne English said that Salgado was arrested and released on a notice to appear on crimes of aggravated DUI and one charge of DUI-BAC over 0.08.

According to Sgt. English, at 4:39 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to Ingalls Avenue and Hosmer Street for a crash. The driver of one vehicle, a Hyundai Santa Fe, had run from the scene following the crash. Officers checking the area found the driver, later identified as Salgado, walking near Burry Street and Norley Avenue. Upon speaking with Salgado, the officers determined that Salgado was driving a Hyundai Santa Fe eastbound on Ingalls Avenue. The Hyundai veered into the westbound lane of Ingalls Avenue and struck a westbound Ford Explorer driven by 27-year-old Joliet resident Cristian Marin, police said.

Following the collision, Salgado ran from the scene, English said.

Meanwhile, Marin was transported to St Joseph Medical Center by the Joliet Fire Department with minor injuries. A 2-year-old female passenger of the Ford was also transported to the hospital with a serious leg injury. Salgado was uninjured. Officers noticed that Salgado exhibited behaviors consistent with possible alcohol impairment, English said.

He said that Salgado indicated that he consumed alcohol prior to driving and acknowledged being involved in the crash. He refused to perform field sobriety tests and was placed into custody. Salgado was also cited for driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an injury accident.

Also, Marin was cited for no child restraint, improper use of registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and suspended registration for non-insurance. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
