JOLIET, IL — One month after new Joliet city manager Beth Beatty ended the employment of economic development director Cesar Suarez, Suarez's supervisor, Eva-Marie Tropper plus the top assistant in the human resources department, Krystal Walsh, there are no shortage of job openings posted on the city of Joliet website.

One job could pay up to $177,570 — serving as a spokesperson for the city of Joliet. For the past several years, Joliet has been without a communications director or public relations specialist but second-year Mayor Terry D'Arcy and Beatty are hoping to bring this position back to life, and they are willing to pay the future employee a lot more money than most of Joliet's firefighters-paramedics and police officers make in a year.

The salary range for Media Engagement & Communications Director is listed as a minimum salary of $111,000 and a top salary of $177,570. If Joliet hired a communications director in the range of $175,000, the new employee would become one of the top paid positions at City Hall.

The position has been advertised since March 13, according to Joliet's website.

According to the job description for the $177,570 position, "Duties include but are not limited to protecting and enhancing the image of the City by overseeing public relations, media relations, crisis communications, internal and external communications, and social media/community functions. Functions as the City’s spokesperson and works with the City Manager, Mayor, City Council, City department heads, community members, and community organizations to respond, develop and implement a communications strategy to share information and increase awareness of the City’s goals to both internal and external constituents."

Joliet wants to hire someone with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or closely related field; Five years’ experience in journalism, public relations, or communications, preferably in a municipality or other government agency including in a supervisory, or management capacity; and someone who is accomplished in the art of government communications.
