Sharon Lauer Obituary
First Woman & Girls Physical Director at the Joliet YMCA, Member of Women of Rotary and Holly Club.

Sharon Lauer (nee Rumchak)
Passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Lightways Hospice Home, surrounded by the love of her family, at the age of 84 years.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years William Lauer. Two devoted daughters Sue (Lou) Melone and Patti (Chuck Kinder) Lauer and her cherished grandchildren Stephanie (Michael) Geinopolos, Sarah Melone, and Tom (Mariah) Melone. Also surviving are her dear siblings William (Carol) Rumchak, Jim (Nancy) Rumchak, and Jean (David) Janes, along with numerous nieces, nephews, treasured friends, and her devoted caregivers, Lori and Gina.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents Vito and Mildred (nee Morrison) Rumchak, and her brother Patrick Rumchak (2020).

Born on November 27, 1940, and raised in Lockport, Sharon was a proud graduate of Lockport Township High School Class of 1958 and Joliet Junior College. A trailblazer and spirited leader, she served as the first Women & Girls Physical Director at the Joliet YMCA, where her infectious positivity earned her the nickname “Sunny”. Sharon’s commitment to youth development and community involvement was evident in her work with the 4H Club, Girl Scouts Trailways Council, the YMCA Historical Committee Chairman, Women of Rotary, and the
Holly Club. A lover of 1950s music, Sharon enjoyed dancing, family camping trips to northern Wisconsin, and summers as a camp counselor at Camp Birch Knoll near Eagle River, WI. She also shared her love of swimming as a YMCA instructor, influencing generations with her warmth, energy, and dedication.

Memorial services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home & Crematory, 2320 Black Road, Tuesday, June 10th at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be at Elmhurst Cemetery. Memorials to Joliet YMCA or Lightways Hospice will be appreciated. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 10th from 9:00 A.M. until time of services.
