The man shot in the Thanksgiving night shoplifting incident at the Kohl's store on Weber Road has been charged with aggravated battery for dragging a Romeoville police officer with his car, Romeoville Deputy Police Chief Steve Lucchesi said.

Charles Andre Hinch, 52, 429 Strong St., Joliet, was booked into the Will County jail Monday after being released from Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his elbow. He also faces a charge of resisting a peace officer, Lucchesi said.

Russell allegedly shut the car door on the arm of the officer trying to stop him while Hinch drove away. A second officer ordered Hinch to stop, and was forced to shoot him when he did not, reports said.

Russell, of 509 Francis St., Joliet, was charged with attempted murder, felony retail theft and obstructing a police officer. A third man, Gerald Chamberlain, 28, 1319 Englewood Ave., Joliet, was charged with felony retail theft and on a parole violation.

The officer who was caught in the door was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Lucchesi said he has been released from the hospital but has not yet returned to active duty. His name is not being released.

"He is receiving further medical attention," Lucchesi said.
