MINOOKA —A 42-year-old Homer Glen man and his 32-year-old friend from Chicago had their plans to deliver a substantial amount of fentanyl to Chicago derailed, thanks to the Grundy County Sheriff's deputies, the agency announced on Thursday.

In the case of defendant Christopher Sherry, instead of the Grundy County Jail, he was taken to Morris Hospital because his legs are in such bad shape they might need to be amputated, Sheriff Ken Briley told Joliet Patch's editor.

"It was a pretty large chunk of skin that was missing," Briley explained.

As for the Chicagoan, Eugene Walker, he spent Wednesday night in the Grundy County Jail, and now he's out because of the SAFE-T-Act and its pretrial release conditions.

Around 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Grundy County Sheriff's deputies pulled over a Toyota for speeding along Ridge Road and the off-ramp of Interstate 80 in Minooka. Deputies saw Sherry and Walker had marijuana inside their car, and it was not properly packaged.

When the deputies for Grundy searched the car, they recovered 307 bags of fentanyl that weighed 217 grams plus $1,961 in cash. Walker and Sherry were taken away in handcuffs on charges of manufacture and delivery of controlled substances, fentanyl.

Sherry went to the Morris Hospital because of his health issues with his legs. Sherry was released from custody and given a future court date, Grundy County noted.

Briley told Patch that sheriff's deputies believe the two men were headed to Chicago with their huge stash of fentanyl at the time of their unexpected arrest in Minooka.
