Troy Middle School Student Won Honorable Mention at MathCON
Tabitha Barowsky was awarded Honorable Mention at this year's MathCON Chicago Finals National Competition.

JOLIET, IL — Tabitha Barowsky, a Troy Middle School eighth-grader, was awarded Honorable Mention at this year’s MathCON Chicago Finals National Competition on April 22.
Only 576 of the 50,000 students nationwide who took the preliminary assessments were invited to participate in the national finals, according to Troy Community School District 30-C math teacher and MathCON sponsor Anita Garvert, and only 25 of those students earned honorable mention.

After Troy’s Mathletes and advanced math students took the MathCON preliminary assessments this spring, Tabitha, along with fellow eighth-grade Troy students David Randolph and Julianna Crompton and seventh-grade student Sean Zarobsky, advanced to the national competition. Eighth-graders Ryan Vetter and Kelly Rappaport were alternates.
Troy math teacher Melissa Cardone was also a sponsor of the district’s participation in the event.

MathCON’s testing categories for seventh and eighth grades included number systems, word problems, absolute value equations, surface area and volume, exponential numbers, numeric patterns and percent equations.
MathCON is a prestigious academic competition hosted by Concept Schools. Its goal is to engage students in STEM subjects outside of the classroom and encourage more students to enter STEM fields.
