Year-Round Lawn Watering Regulations Remain in Effect Despite Heat Wave, Drought

Joliet reps are hailing residents for sticking to year-round water restrictions amidst an ongoing heat wave and general lack of rain.

JOLIET, IL - Local officials applauded residents this week for sticking to year-round water restrictions amidst an ongoing heat wave.

Joliet's water conservation program dictates, among other things, when residents can legally sprinkle their lawns. Despite the recent lack of rain, locals are expected to abide by the ordinance.

"The city of Joliet would like to thank its residents for their cooperation regarding lawn watering in accordance with the water conservation program," officials said, in a community alert. "Watering within the specified hours minimizes water losses due to evaporation and helps promote root development for a healthy lawn."

The restrictions — outlined in the Joliet Code of Ordinances, Sec. 21-126 — say that lawn watering at even-numbered addresses can only be done on even-numbered days. Same goes for odd-numbered addresses. Residents can freely sprinkle on their respective days between 6 and 10 a.m. or 6 and 10 p.m.

The only exception to the odd-even rules applies to homeowners and/or businesses who intend to install sod, officials said. To receive a proper permit for this, call the Department of Public Utilities between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 815-724-4220. Be sure to secure your go-ahead before freshly laying your sod.
