Yes! Yard Waste Pickup Starts Next Month!

You can get your yard waste picked up — but you have to follow the rules.

JOLIET, IL — Got yard waste you want to get rid of? Then mark your calendar, because yard waste collection starts again in a matter of weeks.

Yard waste pickup begins April 3 and will continue on a weekly basis through Dec. 8.

Yard waste should be put out no later than 7 a.m. on the appropriate collection day. Any of the of the following containers can be used:

  • A rigid 33-gallon refuse-type container identified with a “yard waste only” sticker attached
  • 32 –gallon Kraft disposable type paper bags

According to city guidelines, “'Yard waste only' stickers are only required for rigid 33-gallon containers and

should be placed with the sticker clearly visible from the street. Yard waste will not be collected in plastic bags

of any type or size or in containers larger than 33 gallons."

Residents can get free yard waste stickers at:

  • City Hall — 150 W. Jefferson Street
  • Certified Warehouse Foods — 118 E. Jackson
  • Joliet Jewel stores — 1401 W. Jefferson St., 1537 N. Larkin Ave. and 2480 Route 59

The city also provided these guidelines:

“Brush and branches may either be placed in the above mentioned permanent-type containers or Kraft paper bags or may be securely tied with string or twine in bundles not exceeding 4 feet in length nor weighing more than 50 pounds per bundle. No ‘yard waste only’ sticker is necessary for bundled yard waste. Unbundled brush and branches will not be collected.”

The city pointed out that — by state law — yard waste containers can’t contain other trash.

“Please note that sod, dog feces, whole trees, stumps, limbs greater than 3 inches in diameter and dirt are not part of the weekly yard waste program and will not be collected,” the city said in a statement. “Residents can also rent or purchase 96-gallon yard waste toters by contacting the Waste Management Customer Service Center at 815-280-7854.”
