La Grange Traffic Jams Expected At Railroad Crossings

Railroad wants to repair deteriorated crossings in two places, the village said.

LA GRANGE, IL – Two railroad crossings in La Grange are set for repair work over the next month, the village said Friday.

In a statement, the village said the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad plans to work on the deteriorated crossings at East Avenue and 47th Street.

Rail will be replaced at the crossings, with the complete closure of both required to complete the work, the village said.

The 47th crossing is tentatively set to be closed Monday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 28. The East crossing's closing is set for Monday, Aug. 29, to Sunday, Sept. 11.

Only one crossing will be closed at a time, the village said.

Traffic delays and backups are likely to occur, according to the statement.

Drivers are asked to use alternate routes, including Plainfield Road, 55th Street, La Grange Road, Ogden Avenue, and even 47th and East, depending on which crossing is closed.

"We will work with the IHB as much as possible to minimize the inconveniences associated with this project," the village said. "IHB will work as quickly as possible to complete the work in order to minimize the overall duration of the project."
