Lipinski Meets with Local Group, Supports Some Gun-Control Measures

The Congressman (D-3rd District-Western Springs) said he supports universal background checks, restricting magazine sizes and making trafficking a federal crime.

The following is a press release from an currently unnamed local group of mothers, approved by the office of Congressman Lipinski.

Twelve citizens of Western Springs and La Grange, all mothers of young children, met with Congressman Dan Lipinski on Friday, Feb. 8. They expressed their concern about gun violence and urged the congressman to support gun violence prevention measures including restricting assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, requiring universal background checks for all gun purchases and making gun trafficking a federal crime.

The group also gave Rep. Lipinski petitions with more than 125 signatures of his constituents asking him to support President Obama’s proposals to reduce gun violence. Western Springs resident Nicole Chen opened the candid discussion by noting the group’s concern for all children.

“A group of mothers started organizing and wanted to do something following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School and after we attended a gun violence vigil in Chicago in January,” Chen stated. “An important step was meeting with Representative Lipinski to discuss his feelings on proposed legislation to address the issue.”

During the meeting, Representative Lipinski said he would support some of the proposed gun violence measures, including restricting high-capacity magazines, requiring universal background checks for all gun purchases and making gun trafficking a federal crime. He did not say whether he would support restricting assault weapons.

“I felt Representative Lipinski engaged in an honest discussion and we appreciate the opportunity to advocate for the gun violence prevention measures he supports.” says Erin Hill, of La Grange.

The group will continue to work towards addressing gun violence issues in our community and beyond. If you are interested in the work of the group, they can be contacted at commonsensereform@gmail.com.
