LYONS, IL – A Lyons man has been arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in a 2024 expressway shooting, state police announced Monday.

The victim, 41-year-old Damian Dunning of Chicago, a post office employee, was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead, according to a state police news release.

On Feb. 7, state police agents tried to stop a car in which Reyes was a passenger, but the driver fled, police said. Once the car stopped, Reyes got out and ran away, but was caught a short while later, police said. Officers said an AK-47 was found in the car.

At the time, Reyes was charged with felony aggravated unlawful use of a weapon with no firearm owner's identification card and resisting arrest.

Once agents gathered more information, an FBI task force arrested Reyes on the murder charge.

"After an extensive investigation by (state police) special agents, a murder suspect has been taken into custody to face justice," the state police's director, Brendan Kelly, said in the news release. "The FBI played an important role here, which underscores the importance of our strong relationship with them."
