Make La Grange A 'Speed Trap' Again: Resident

An official said the village has been stepping up enforcement. The number of traffic tickets has plunged locally.

LA GRANGE, IL – La Grange resident Mike Waters told village officials this week that he remembered when La Grange Road was known as a "speed trap."

He said he would like that reputation to return.

"That was great where it slowed everybody down whether there was actually enforcement there or not," said Waters, who lives just off La Grange Road on Elm Avenue. "We're hoping we could start seeing some of that again."

In December, Patch reported how the number of traffic tickets and stops has plunged in La Grange over the last 15 years. A couple of years ago, a village trustee urged the police department to write more tickets.

During Monday's Village Board meeting, Waters pleaded with the village to step up enforcement now that the police department was fully staffed.

"The cars just speed down La Grange Road," he said. "I think I can speak for all of my neighbors on or near La Grange Road when I say it's very concerning for anyone trying to cross La Grange Road where there's not a stoplight. It's dangerous."

In response, Trustee Beth Augustine, who lives near La Grange Road, said she sees the problem as well.

"But from my position up here and my frequency to be able to interact with the (police) chief and staff, I do happen to know we have been stepping up efforts and doing as good of a job as we can with the limited resources we have," she said.
